Toxic Leadership goes unchecked in the Coast Guard | Kim Young-McLear- S.O.S. podcast #80
My most challenging shows to do are the ones that hit me in the gut. I hope that by sharing the stories of those who fought back against abusive work climates and the injustices with the military complaint process and then going on to educate others, maybe we one day stop the continuum of harm.
All it takes are brave bystanders willing to intervene and support victims at the cost of their own safety.
In 2014, Commander Kim Young-McLear became a whistleblower when she reported gross and unlawful misconduct within the U.S. Coast Guard. Her extensive years of whistleblowing have shown extraordinary courage – including as a State of the Union guest of honor and publicly testifying on Capitol Hill – she exposed systemic abuses of power at the highest levels of the Coast Guard, revealing loopholes and disregard to how sexual assault, bullying, harassment, discrimination, retaliation cases are handled.
Because of her bravery, Commander Young-McLear’s advocacy has resulted in more than 30 policy improvements across the Coast Guard, making the Coast Guard better reflect of U.S. values and increasing compliance with anti-harassment and anti-discrimination laws. She is a staunch advocate for mental health resources for veterans.
She aspires to continue her advocacy beyond the federal government, combatting injustices that plague our communities and society. She is passionate about blending art and music into healing and activism practices.
Whistleblowers across tech, healthcare, academia, first responders, and other sectors speak out daily and play a vital role in the safety, security, and well-being of people in the US and worldwide. And they need your continued support.
In 60 seconds, you can show your support of whistleblowers by sending your joint digital letter to President Biden.
